America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Distribution

Nine out of eleven of the US Mint’s authorized purchasers have decided to go along with the new terms and conditions covering the distribution of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins.

The 5 ounce silver bullion coins featuring duplicate designs of the circulating quarter dollar series became hot items once collectors learned of the limited mintage of just 33,000 coins per design. Based on the high demand and limited supply available, one of the US Mint’s primary distributors began accepting orders for the coins at a premium considered to be excessive.

Complaints from customers caused the US Mint to halt and relaunch the program with price controls and other measures to ensure broad distribution to the public. In order to participate in the distribution of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, the primary distributors had to agree to sell all coins directly to the public, limit premiums to 10% above acquisition cost, and impose household ordering limits. The rules seemed problematic for some of the distributors who generally only sell in bulk quantities to other dealers.

The US Mint’s eleven primary distributors were able to place orders with the United States Mint from December 10 to 17. The nine who purchase their allotments of 3,000 coins of each designs are included below:

  • A-Mark Precious Metals (Los Angeles)
  • Coins ‘N Things (Massachusetts)
  • MTB (New York)
  • American Precious Metals Exchange, Inc. (Oklahaoma)
  • Dillon Gage Incorporated of Dallas (Texas)
  • Prudential Securities Inc. (New York)
  • The Gold Center (Illinois)
  • Jack Hunt Coin Broker (New York)
  • Fidelitrade (Delaware)

The coins allocated to the two primary distributors who did not place orders will be reallocated to active sellers this week.

In the first quarter of 2011, the United States Mint plans to offer numismatic versions of the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. These would be limited to 27,000 coins per design and sold directly to the public via the US Mint’s website and by telephone.

  1. I have often wondered how much the “authorized distributors” pay the “powers” for their right to first crack sales of Mint collector coins. I prefer to buy them from the Mint, as it much less expensive. It sounds like alot of “Grease” is going somewhere to obtain the right to be an authorized distributor. The Mint surely could easily sell all of their issuses directly to the public. But then, I guess that would eliminate the grease. I do not expect that to ever happen. Toledo Ohio

  2. “price controls and other measures to ensure broad distribution to the public.” How about this measure: MINT ENOUGH TO MEET DEMAND.

  3. How about giving the public a choice of where to buy. They could buy directly from the mint or from an authorized distributor. Given a choice where would you buy? I would chose the mint because it is less costly. someone else may prefer the convenience of a distributor. Price controls would not be necessary. Market forces would control the prices.

  4. CHECK OUT ALL THE NUTS ON EBAY PAYING UP TO 2,500.00 FOR THESE.LOOKS LIKE THE PEOPLE THAT REALY WANTED THESE COULDN’T GET THEM. (THE REAL COLLECTOR )
ONLY THE GREADY AMERICANS GOT THEM, AS SOON AS THEY GET THEM THERE ON EBAY.
MY BUYING FROM THE MINT DAYS ARE ABOUT OVER,THERE’S NO REASON THEY COULDN’T SELL THEM TO THE COLLECTORS ON THE MINTS WEBSITE.

  5. Just one problem with the article they say the mint relaunched with price controls that incorrect the guide lines are in the agreement to be an AP when they first signed up to sell bullion silver, gold eagles all bullion products, they chose not to follow them knowing that they would get what ever they asked.the mint had to stop and remind them of the agreement they signed,it kills them to think that someone else will make the money rather then them.I want a set but will wait for collectors edition to come out.Over the next 10 years they will make plenty of money off this series i just got tired of hearing that the mint had to set new guide lines for the AP when in fact they had to remind the AP of the agreement to sell at a reasonable premium not a market premium i dont believe 100% is a reasonable premium. And unfortunatly fedral law prevents the mint from selling bullion products which these are but the collector version will be out soon but very hard to obtain,i dont know if anyone here has tried to get through to the mint on releas days but its hard by phone or internet.Last point now that minting problems are solved the 100,000 mintage will help some in the following years

  6. The (The Gold Center (Illinois) is only selling from his store. Apmex in the rest said they dont know when they will sell their coins. Yea right the US mint and these 9 people can take these coins and stick it where the Sun dont shine.I been with the Mint for 17 years. No more you can kiss my money good by.

  7. WELL SAID JIM WALLIN.
I WAS WRONG THE EBAY NUTS ARE UP TO 3,100.00 FOR THESE HOCKEY PUCKS. BUY PLAIN BULLION AND GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH.
JUST TWO YEARS AGO I THOUGHT I WAS NUTS FOR PAYING 67.00 FOR 5oz PERTH MINT COLORIZED ROUNDS WHICH ARE MUCH NICER TOO.BOY WAS I WRONG.

  8. Aberrant Pachyderm says

I purchased a set on Ebay, as it is readily apparent that I will not be able to procure one through usual channels. I am very disappointed in the way the US Mint has handled these coins. They should have been produced in quantities adequate to meet demand.

From this point forward, limited quantity products should be sold directly by the US Mint. Even though these are classified as bullion products, the mintages are even lower than the usual commemorative.

I urge everyone to contact thier Congressman.

  9. I see that HSN on TV has 210 set’s for sell @ $4,795.00. Yea right one set per house. Just more lies from these guys & the Mint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. The Mint Director needs to be fired. Shame on the Mint for selling these coins to wholesaler who jack up the price of these coins. Shame on you Wholesalers, the “little” people have the same rights as the rich. NOT. This Government is very corrupt. Shame on this Government. Now come and knock on my front door. No wonder this country is so hated.

  11. It is sad to be unable to get those bullions directly from the mint and they are the first of the series ATB , i wounder how it will be handled next year.

However there are still authorized dealers by US mint that are taking orders, and i just submitted one after verifying with the mint the fact that they got the bullions.

I will see what will happen in the next few days.

  12. How about distributing these the way they do the dollar bills — through the banks (federal reserve). That system is already in place. But wait — that would cut out the middle man. Write your United States congressmen.
